I've made these many times since the first time and I switched to using Candiquick or melts, not because I'm afraid of eating wax but because it's just easier and the results are better (those products set up quicker and more reliably).

I made 14 very large patties.

I said I wasn't going to make a new recipe for the bake sale but I got it in my head that I wanted to make peppermint patties. When I was in the hospital after having Dan someone brought me a handmade peppermint patty from the gift shop and it was so good, I've been wanting to try my hand at making them ever since.

I had copied an Easter egg recipe from somewhere and modified it to make the peppermint patties.

I made them rather large and although my chocolate dipping skills are lacking, they didn't look too bad (on the topsides at least) and they were definitely what I was looking for as far as taste goes.

We'll see how they sell. The bake sale is tomorrow. I think I'm going to add these to my Christmas goodie list.

This might be it for the week. I have so much to do by Saturday.

Question of the Day: Do you like Peppermint Patties?

  1. The parafin thing kinda freaks me out. I love Peppermint patties, I hope they dont contain parafin.

  3. People have been adding paraffin to chocolate for years and years. It's perfectly safe in small amounts. Many candies contain wax coatings and many fruits and vegetables are coated with wax.

Would I use it everyday? No, of course not. In fact this is the first time I've ever used it but I've eaten candy made with it before. It was only a small amount (1 ounce) and I guarantee that you could not eat more than one of these patties in a day - the sugar in these is much worse for you than the paraffin!

  6. Its not that I think its unsafe, the thought of eating wax just kinda freaks me out. When I first met Robin, she made tons of chocolates with her cousin and they used parafin, I still remember that and I remember just seeing tons of chocolates on a table and thinking god, thats a lot of parafin. LOL

  7. For people who'd rather not use the parafin, I think you could either temper chocolate yourself or buy tempered chocolate. I'm going to try these soon with tempered chocolate so I'll let you know how they turn out.
