Beans, beans, good for your heart
--Bar-B-Q Baked Beans

Bar-B-Q Baked Beans
The Ugly Binder, from Allrecipes.com

1 (15 ounce) can kidney beans, drained (optional)
1 (15 ounce) can pinto beans, drained I used 2 cans of pintos
1 (15 ounce) can lima beans, drained
1 (16 ounce) can great Northern beans, drained
1 (12 ounce) bottle chili sauce
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons molasses
3 slices bacon, cut in half I pre-cooked it in the microwave

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C).
In a medium baking dish, mix kidney beans, pinto beans, lima beans, great northern beans, chili sauce, brown sugar, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce and molasses. Top with bacon.
Bake 1 hour in the preheated oven, until thick and bubbly. I cooked mine in the crockpot for a few hours on high.

This recipe is from Allrecipes.com but I'm pretty sure I got it from someone on a message board. I think the same person posted it at allrecipes. I've made these beans several times for my big summer cookout and there are usually only 1 or 2 servings left from a crockpot full of beans ( I usually at least double the recipe). I added an extra can of beans, just because I had an extra can, so the beans aren't as saucy here as they would be if you followed the recipe exactly.

This recipe isn't as sweet as a lot of baked bean recipes. Don't get me wrong, I love sweet baked beans too, but this spicier version just seems to go over better with a crowd. People seem to love the variety of beans in this recipe too.

I guess it's time to start planning my cookout. It won't be until August but I can already tell that this summer is going to fly by in the wink of an eye.

Question of the Day: Do you make baked beans? How do you make them?

  1. Nope...I don't make baked beans because I don't like them. It's funny because every time I go somewhere that has them, I always get a little bit and decided, nope, I still don't like them!

  2. I'm about to start making baked beans tomorrow. I've already bought my smoked pork hock and I soak the beans overnight and then cook them all day long in an earthenware dish with the pork, onion, maple syrup, mustard powder, ketchup, brown sugar and beer.

I think I made them a looong time ago. I like them, but at cookouts we're "a pot of pinto beans" people. When we want baked beans at a meal, we use Bush's (not the president) Baked Beans. They're very good.

By the way, I can't wait to sink my teeth into that pork recipe you had yesterday.

I use an old recipe from the Grillin & Chillin show by Bobby Flay on Food Network. Adding green pepper, fresh onions, chopped ham, chopped bacon...they are always devoured when I take them to BBQs.
And that pork recipe does look amazing!!!Thanks for the posts!

Am I embarassed! All the comments talking about the good ingredients that are going into their baked beans, sounding so delicious, making me hungry for them - and here I am talking about a CAN of beans. I hereby vow to make baked beans from scratch.

Jan, giggle, I use the canned ones too!
But this recipe sounds a lot like the baked beans my Grandma crock pots at Christmas time! I may have to try this.

  10. I usually use a Martha Stewart Recipe( not hers, but a guests). It has onion, green pepper, bbq sauce, brown sugar, ketchup, etc. I recently made a Paula Dean recipe for Sue and Gloria's baked beans. It was very good( I cut the molasses way down though).

  11. i have a recipe to make baked beans from scratch, but most of the time I just add cooked peppers and onions, molasses, ketchup and bacon to cans of baked beans. my brother in law thinks i make them from scratch and loves them. i will never tell him the truth.

  12. Those look good!
I just posted a recipe for baked beans on my site as well - I guess it is that time of year!

  13. Umm, open the can, pour them into a bowl. Cook them in the microwave for about a minute (meanwhile cook the toast). Take the beans out of the microwave and stir in some grated cheese. Butter the toast and stick in the edge of the bowl. Add a fork and hand it to the kids with a big smile and say, "Lucky you, beans for dinner. Yummo!"
