My first steak
--Savory Sirloin Steak
Savory Sirloin Steak
Char-Broil Grill Lovers Cookbook Copyright 1985
¼ cup Worcestershire sauce
1 tbs. minced onion
2 tbs. lemon juice
2 tbs. oil
1 tsp. salt
½ tsp. instant minced garlic
1 (3 lb) sirloin steak
2 tbs. steak sauce
2 tbs. butter, melted
1 tbs. chopped parsley
1 tsp. Worcestershire
Combine first 6 ingredients. Pour into a heavy plastic bag and add steak. Marinate in refrigerator 4 hours or overnight, turning occasionally. Remove steaks from marinade about 1 hour before grilling. Drain. Place on grill over hot fire. Grill about 8 to 12 minutes on each side, or to desired degree of doneness. Combine remaining ingredients and spoon over steak before serving. Slice steak in thin diagonal slices.

Sirloin was my introduction to steak, I believe. It's one of the cheaper cuts you can get away with broiling or grilling. We never saw NY Strip on the table when I was growing up, being a middle-class family of six. Sirloin steak was a special treat, usually a Sunday dinner. I thought this steak was as good as any NY Strip I've made at home. Nostalgia maybe?
I don't think my mom ever marinated her steak but it added a nice touch. We never had steak sauce growing up either (we were condiment deprived) but I really liked the steak sauce mellowed out with the butter here. Ketchup would still be good (that was how I ate it growing up).
This really hit the spot. I bought the steak on a buy one get one free sale so I have another one in the freezer. Something to look forward to.
I may not have anything to blog about tomorrow. Just bad planning on my part this week.
Blast From The Past: Marinated Flank Steak from May 2007. I've used that marinade several times and it's great but this one has a more traditional flavor.
Question of the Day: Did you eat steak very often for dinner when you were growing up?

I didn't, but I think my mom did. My papa had a cattle farm and they had a good supply of beef!
Yes, we had steak fairly often.
We had it more often than one would think, with four kids and all. But my mother worked in the States and shopped over there where the prices were better and the money went further. Sometimes they went in on a side of beef with other people and filled the freezer. Cheaper cuts mostly, usually baked in the oven. As we got older, we had better steaks cooked on the grill.
We had steaks, but they were the kind that were bought in bulk (ie cheap) and my mom cooked them well done. So I honestly didn't really like steak until I got older and started getting better cuts and cooking it medium rare.
My parents would have steak (once in a blue moon) and us kids would get hotdogs or hamburgers. But if they were having t-bone then I would get my dads steak bone and eat all the tid-bits off! lol I still like to chew all the bits off the bone.
You have been tagged, my dear :)
We had it a lot, but it was always round steak, pan fried. My father didn't like chicken so we never had it and we never had fish. So it was always some sort of beef. I also had round steak at my grandmother's a lot. She would broil (!!??!) it. I can't imagine why it wasn't tough as a boot. I remember that she would always put butter and lemon juice on it when it was done.

Maybe a couple of times a month. Ground beef was a staple in my house growing up.
This recipe sounds pretty good. I should give it a try. I feel nervous about cooking steak since I never make it. I always feel like it's going to come out dry and tasteless.
Seems like this recipe might be the reason to give it a try.
Hee hee, condiment deprived! I don't think so, but when I was little I thought all meat (pork, chicken, ham) was steak. No one knows why.
I didn't have steak until I was 18. They were too expensive for my large family's budget and too tough for my mom's taste (since both parents wanted all meat well done).
I like a good steak now and then (medium rare), but still prefer a nice roast beef over steak.
